The intermediate orchestra (based on standard) is named after Ruth Alexander who assisted Professor John Bishop in establishing the music camp movement in Australia. Together they organised music camps at both state and national level with the crowning glory being the formation of the Australian Youth Orchestra in March 1957 which is a vital part of the youth music scene in Australia today. At the annual National Music Camp the tradition of naming the intermediate orchestra after Ruth Alexander continues and many older generations of music campers still affectionately refer to memories of 'Aunty Ruth'.
